European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
