Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
