An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret information in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
