Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
