Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
